A Few Things This Calculator Assumes
How is the projected balance worked out?
We grow your current balance at your chosen return rate each year, and add your contributions on top. Contributions are your employer's 12% Super Guarantee plus any extra you enter. For simplicity we apply your return to the running balance once a year and treat contributions as added through the year. It is a guide, not a guarantee, because real returns move up and down.
Does this account for contributions tax and the caps?
No. Most contributions into super are taxed at 15% going in, and concessional contributions (your SG plus salary sacrifice) are capped at $30,000 a year. If your income is over $250,000, Division 293 can add another 15% on some contributions. This calculator keeps it simple and ignores these, so the real figure can be lower. Getting the contribution mix right, within the caps, is one of the most valuable things a good accountant helps with.
How is the retirement income estimated?
We spread your projected balance evenly across the number of years you choose, while the remaining balance keeps earning a modest return. It is a steady drawdown estimate in today's style of dollars, and it does not include the age pension, which many retirees also receive. A real retirement income plan blends super, the pension and other assets, which is the kind of thing we model properly.
Is the Super Guarantee really 12%?
Yes. From 1 July 2025 the Super Guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary earnings, the final step in a series of increases. If you are self-employed or run a company, your super works differently, and we can help you structure contributions tax-effectively.
