This estimate assumes you are a working holiday maker (417 or 462 visa) for the whole period, ignores the Medicare levy (most WHMs are exempt and can apply for a Medicare levy exemption certificate), superannuation, study loans and any other income, and is not personal tax advice. A Few Things This Calculator Assumes
What is the working holiday maker tax rate?
If you hold a 417 or 462 visa, a special schedule applies. The first $45,000 of your Australian income is taxed at a flat 15%. Income above $45,000 is then taxed at the ordinary resident rates: 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% above that. There is no $18,200 tax-free threshold for working holiday makers.
Why is so much tax coming out of my pay?
Your employer must be registered with the ATO to withhold at the 15% backpacker rate. If they are not registered, they have to withhold at the foreign-resident rate (32.5% from the first dollar), which is much higher. Switch the toggle to "not registered" to see that difference. If too much was withheld, you claim it back when you lodge your return.
Do I pay the Medicare levy?
Usually not. Most working holiday makers are not entitled to Medicare, so they are exempt from the 2% Medicare levy. You can apply to Services Australia for a Medicare Entitlement Statement to confirm the exemption when you lodge. This calculator leaves the levy out for that reason.
Will I get my superannuation back?
Super is separate from this calculator. Your employer pays super on top of your wages, and once you leave Australia and your visa ends you can claim a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment (DASP). Be aware the DASP is taxed at a high rate for working holiday makers, so it is worth getting advice before you claim.
