eCommerce GST & Import Duty Calculator Australia

Bringing stock in from overseas? Enter the goods value, freight and duty rate and we'll estimate your customs duty, the 10% GST, and the true landed cost per shipment, so your margins do not get a nasty surprise at the border.

The price you paid for the goods, converted to AUD. This is the customs value Home Affairs uses, before freight and insurance.
$
Overseas shipping plus insurance to get the goods to Australia. Added to the GST base on imports over $1,000.
$
Editable. Most goods are 5%, many are free (0%) under a trade agreement, and some categories differ. Check the tariff classification or ask us.
%
Tap to drop in a typical rate. These are indicative starting points, not a classification.
Optional. Multiply the landed cost across a batch of the same consignment to plan a purchase order.
If your business is GST registered, import GST is generally claimable back as a credit on your BAS, so it is a cash-flow cost, not a final cost.

General information only, current for the 2025-26 financial year. This estimate assumes a single consignment, applies a flat 10% GST, and ignores wine equalisation tax, dumping duties, tobacco and fuel excise, processing charges and exchange-rate movements. Duty depends on the correct tariff classification and origin. It is not personal tax or customs advice. For figures you can rely on, talk to us.

A Few Things This Calculator Assumes

What is the $1,000 low-value threshold?

Goods imported in a consignment with a customs value of $1,000 or less generally clear the border without customs duty or border-collected GST. For these low-value imported goods, GST is instead charged at the point of sale by the overseas merchant or platform if they are registered for Australian GST. For consignments over $1,000, customs duty and GST are assessed and collected at the border before the goods are released. This calculator applies the over-$1,000 border treatment by default and flags when your value sits under the threshold.

How is the import GST actually calculated?

For imports over $1,000, GST of 10% is charged on the value of the taxable importation. That base is the customs value of the goods, plus any customs duty payable, plus the cost of international transport and insurance. So GST is calculated on goods plus duty plus freight, not on the goods value alone. That is why freight pushes both your duty-free landed cost and your GST up.

Do I get the import GST back?

If your business is registered for GST and the goods are for your taxable business, you can generally claim the import GST as a credit on your activity statement, so it becomes a timing and cash-flow cost rather than a real one. Customs duty, by contrast, is a genuine cost that stays in your stock value. Eligible importers can also defer the GST under the deferred GST scheme so they are not out of pocket at the border. We set that up where it helps your cash flow.

How do I know my duty rate is right?

Duty depends on the tariff classification of the specific goods and the country of origin. Many products are duty-free under a free trade agreement when you hold the right origin documents, while others sit at 5% or a special rate. The presets in this tool are indicative only. Getting the classification and origin right (and the paperwork to back it) is exactly the kind of thing we sort out for importers, often saving more than our fee.
