A Few Things This Calculator Assumes

What is the instant asset write-off?

Small businesses with turnover under $10M can immediately deduct the full business-use cost of an eligible asset that costs less than $20,000 (GST-exclusive), in the year it is first used or installed ready for use. The $20,000 threshold applies per asset, so you can write off several. The threshold is subject to change by legislation, so we confirm the current rule when we lodge.

Diminishing value or prime cost?

Prime cost spreads the cost evenly across the asset's effective life (cost divided by life). Diminishing value applies a higher rate (200% divided by life) to the reducing balance, so you claim more early and less later. Total deductions over the asset's life are the same; diminishing value just brings the benefit forward. Once chosen for an asset, the method generally cannot be changed.

Why does business use and the date matter?

You can only claim the business-use portion. A laptop used 80% for work is depreciated on 80% of its cost. For depreciation, the deduction is also pro-rated for the number of days you held the asset in the year. The instant asset write-off is not pro-rated for days, but it is still reduced for private use.

What about cars and bigger purchases?

Cars have a depreciation cost limit ($69,674 for 2025-26), so the claim is capped even if the car costs more, and GST credits are limited too. Assets over the write-off threshold can often go into a small business general pool and depreciate faster than the standard rate. These are exactly the rules we apply for you, rather than leaving deductions on the table.
